Origins of Step Dance
Step is a form of dance that has been in existence for decades. Stepping in its current state was started by fraternities and sororities, originally for pledges or new initiates in the early 1940’s. This dance form has grown in popularity, among Greek and non-Greeks. The sophisticated, synchronized chanting and rhythmic beats from participant hands, feet and mouth have taken on a much greater audience during the last two decades.
Competitions around the country, music videos, and music have taken us by storm, as this exciting style of art continues to grow by leaps and bounds. No longer is step reserved for Greek fraternities and sororities, but has made its way to local churches, schools and now American Youth Football, Cheer & Dance.
Today, youth across America embrace this art form, which provides groups with a sense of unity, teamwork, discipline, self-esteem and responsibility.
