Preventing Injuries for Youth Teams

   
Supervision

  • Enforce local and National safety rules for youth teams
  • Use of proper techniques 
  • Require proper spotting for all mounts all the time
  • Require proper spotting for all at-risk gymnastics maneuvers
  • Have an emergency plan in place and practice the procedure
  • Teach gradual progression to difficult skills
  • - remember perfection before progression -

Equipment

  • Practice on mats or pads indoor
  • Practice on grassy flat areas free of obstacles   
  • Wear well-fitted shoes with good cushioning and a stable base
  • Wear practice gear not loose clothing during practice

Coaches should:

  • Supervise practices at all times
  • Make sure all athletes are completely warmed up to avoid injury
  • Identify and treat injuries early
  • Have a practice plan

Athletes should:

  • Progress gradually in practice intensity
  • Strengthen shoulder and rotator cuff (especially "base" athletes)
  • Strengthen lower back and abdomen (all athletes)
  •  Increase flexibility
  • Increase motor strength
