Preventing Injuries for Youth Teams
Supervision
- Enforce local and National safety rules for youth teams
- Use of proper techniques
- Require proper spotting for all mounts all the time
- Require proper spotting for all at-risk gymnastics maneuvers
- Have an emergency plan in place and practice the procedure
- Teach gradual progression to difficult skills
- - remember perfection before progression -
Equipment
- Practice on mats or pads indoor
- Practice on grassy flat areas free of obstacles
- Wear well-fitted shoes with good cushioning and a stable base
- Wear practice gear not loose clothing during practice
Coaches should:
- Supervise practices at all times
- Make sure all athletes are completely warmed up to avoid injury
- Identify and treat injuries early
- Have a practice plan
Athletes should:
- Progress gradually in practice intensity
- Strengthen shoulder and rotator cuff (especially "base" athletes)
- Strengthen lower back and abdomen (all athletes)
- Increase flexibility
- Increase motor strength
